Knowing about Cuff links

Posted on | December 17, 2009 | No Comments

Cufflinks (also cuff-links or cuff links) are decorative pieces used to fasten the two sides of cuff on a blouse or a dress shirt.

They are designed only for shirts with no buttons but with buttonholes on both sides. Cufflinks are divided into single-length and double-length (also ‘French’) and may be worn either ‘barrel-style’ where one end overlaps the other or ‘kissing’ where the ends are pinched firmly together. The ‘kissing’ version of the cufflinks is usually preferred. The cufflinks design varies widely.

There are simple designs consisting of short chain or post connecting the two disc-shaped parts. One side of the cufflink is usually larger, that’s because it’s the most visible one and it tries to show its finesse and beauty. The use of cufflinks dates many years back. They were first used in the XVI century to fasten the sleeves of the shirts which was quite like the modern day one. At first the sleeves we fastened with cuff strings but about a century later the modern cufflinks came on the scene.

As time passed cufflinks became more and more famous and requested, now they are a symbol of wealth and elegance. This is because of their relatively cheap too. However some cufflink designs can cost up to thousands of dollars for the pair. The price depends on the design and the material which the cufflink is made from. Normally cufflinks made from silver, gold and platinum are most expensive
