ADD A FAVICON TO YOUR WEB PAGES
Posted on | December 11, 2009 | No Comments
A FAVICON is a unique icon which represents a web page or web site and which gets displayed in the browser bar next to the site’s URL. It adds credability and professionalism as well as brand identity. More and more websites are using FAVICON so why not join them and create your own FAVICON now :
STEP # 1
Open up your favourite paint program. You do not need to design anything too elaborate. For example on our web site our FAVICON is symbolised by a white “P” on a coloured background. Take a look at the PRIME WEB TRAFFIC WEBSITE at http://www.primewebtraffic.co.uk to understand what we mean. The size should be 16 X 16 pixels.
STEP # 2
Once you are happy with your design save it to your hard drive (but remember where you store it) using any file name you wish so long as it is supported in either a JPG , GIF or BMP format. Then go to this FREE FAVICON GENERATOR at http://www.favicon.co.uk/index.php and add your file. The generator will then render your FAVICON into a .ico format automatically.
STEP # 3
Assuming you are happy with the design please download it and save. You will then need to upload the FAVICON.ICO file to the root directory of your webspace. Most browsers will automatically detect the FAVICON.ICO file even on web pages written is PHP , ASP etc. We do also recommend that you add the following code to all your web pages <link rel=”shortcut icon” onClick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(’/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=”favicon.ico”> between the <head> and </head> part of your web page code. This will ensure that your FAVICON is displayed properly.
STEP # 4
Now upload your web pages to your web space. Refresh the web page in your browser and your new FAVICON should be displayed. In some cases you may need to delete your browser history before the FAVICON takes affect. If you cannot see your FAVICON just delete your browser history and re enter your URL into the browser task bar. Your FAVICON will then be displayed.
